Civil society initiatives for peace, from banning landmines, cluster weapons, and nuclear weapons to civilian peacebuilding, would not have been possible without the leadership of NGOs and governments, and the partnership between them. Exactly who led whom, when and why, and exactly who partnered with whom, when, and why are interesting and important questions. They may be the key to understanding--and potentially replicating in other areas--the success of civil society initiatives.
In this session, we will explore the leadership and partnership of civil society organizations and countries through the experience of ICBL, ICAN and civilian peacebuilding, and discuss how that knowledge can be applied to future disarmament, peacebuilding, and other areas.
