Biography
경희대학교 정치외교학과에 재직 중인 유현석 교수는 국제정치 분야 중에서 동아시아 지역협력, 한국외교정책, 공공외교 등에 관심을 가지고 강의와 연구를 해오고 있다. 외교통상부 자체평가위원, 국무총리실 산하 정부업무평가위원회 실무위원(외교통상부 담당)으로 일했고 통일부 자문위원, 민주평통 상임위원 등을 지냈다. 태국 출라롱콘대학교 국제안보문제연구소(ISIS) 방문 연구원, 일본 게이오대학교 법정대학 방문교수(일한문화교류기금 펠로우) 으로 연구활동을 했다. 2013년부터 2016년까지 공공외교를 실행하는 외교부 산하기관인 한국국제교류재단(Korea Foundation) 이사장으로 일했고 2016년 5월부터 2018년 2월까지 주말레이시아 한국대사로 근무했다. 저서로는 한국 외교에 침을 뱉기 전에(2022, 한울엠플러스), 국제정세의 이해: 복합위기의 시대: 지구촌의 아젠다와 국제관계 (2021, 한울엠플러스), 유현석 교수의 공공외교 수업(2020, 한울엠플러스), 동아시아 지역주의(2012, 집문당) 등이 있다. 유현석 교수는 연세대학교 정치외교학과(학사), 미국 University of Colorado, Boulder(정치학 석사) 그리고 미국 Northwestern University(정치학 박사, 1995)에서 공부했다.
Professor Hyun-seok Yu is currently at the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Korea. He is specialized in regional cooperation and regional architectures in East Asia, Korea’s foreign policy issues, and public diplomacy. He served many advisory positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Unification and the Prime Minister’s office. He was a visiting scholar in the ISIS of Chularongkorn University, Bankok, Thailand and a visiting professor of College of Law and Politics of Keio University, Tokyo, Japan. He played an instrumental role to upgrade Korea’s public diplomacy in his capacity as the president of Korea Foundation, an affiliated organ of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea. Dr. Yu also served as the Ambassador of Republic of Korea to Malaysia from May 2016 to February of 2018. He majored in Political science at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea and his master’s degree in Political Science from University of Colorado, Boulder, USA. In 1995 he earned Ph. D. degree in Political Science from Northwestern University, Evanston, USA
