Local Press’ Role and Its Vitalization for Regional Community

Forming public opinion through the media is necessary to solve conflict and make extensive prosperity in the common society.
However, if you look deep into the process of forming public opinion, the central press still leads and drives the major public sentiment formation in Korea. In order to form local issues that are referred to the community and make a consensus, the Local press' role is highly emphasized. When society neglects the local issues, it gets harder to accomplish an equally developed democracy through decentralization of power.
In this session, we focus on the Local press’ role and vitalization for the regional community to cope with the complex crisis era and to head for sustainable peace. Especially in the diverse media milieu, we discuss the local press’ task allocation and healthy competition to improve plans to solve social imbalance, democracy, self-governing, and equal development. We also examine the meaning of the Special Act on Assistance in the Development of Local Newspapers and the government’s policy results and tasks.
