The Korean Peninsula is facing a period of turbulent transition through the Cold War and post-Cold War, with divisions that have not been resolved for over a century. Inter-Korean relations, which advocated a temporary special relationship aimed at unification rather than a relationship between countries, are also facing a fundamental challenge after North Korea's claim of hostile two states two years ago. In particular, there is a growing tendency to have a perception of inter-Korean relations based on ‘nationality’ rather than ‘ethnicity’ in the growing future generations. The contemporary challenges of achieving unification and peace on the Korean Peninsula are closely related to international cooperation for establishing peace in the East Asian region, as well as to civic education for this purpose. We will hear firsthand what kind of unification education should be provided to future generations for peace and common prosperity on the Korean Peninsula, and what future generations think of the future of North and South Korea.
