Challenges and Tasks for Seeking Sustainable Policy on North Korea and Unification

Time

Organization
Unification Policy Studies Division, Korea Institute for National Unification

The previous administrations of the Republic of Korea have so far pursued dual objectives - realizing an ultimate goal of unification and addressing a practical issue of North Korea’s nuclear pursuit. To that end, the governments of the past have repeated a cycle of appeasement policy toward the North, which focuses on dialogue and cooperation, and coercive policy, which emphasizes sanctions and pressure. However, we are now confronted with a solemn reality where inter-Korean relations are severed amidst North Korea’s increasingly sophisticated nuclear advancement. Therefore, now is the time to pursue a more sustainable and realistic policy on North Korea and unification to harbor peace and unification on the Peninsula. This session aims to reflect on the existing policies and discuss a future-oriented policy toward North Korea and unification.<
