In the early 2000s, the government of South Korea initiated the establishment of ‘Jeju Free International City’ in order to foster Jeju as a new national growth engine by developing it as the hub of business & logistics.
Over the past 20 years, the ‘Jeju Free International City’ project has brought substantial economic benefits such as the diversification of Jeju’s industrial structure as well as the rise in regional GDP and population. Nevertheless, these benefits were accompanied by social side effects such as increases in waste production, traffic and the price of real estate, rendering it necessary to reassess the future direction of the project.
Accordingly, it is essential to gather a wide range of expert opinions on Jeju's future strategic path given the changes in domestic and global environment, and thereby define JDC’s specific role in contributing to the bolstering of Jeju’s status as an international city.
