With President Moon Jae-in propelled into office in 2017, the Korean administration has consistently pursued its North Korea policy aimed at inter-Korean reconciliation, cooperation, and promotion of peace on the Korean Peninsula. The new administration’s conciliatory has fostered the rapid political changes on the Peninsula including North Korea’s participation in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. This stands in sharp contrast to last year’s escalating tensions emanating from North’s incessant nuclear and missile provocations, and the Trump administration considering a preemptive military strike against the North Korean regime. After the historic inter-Korean summit successfully ended with global attention, it is now worth questioning whether the Korean Peninsula could be free from nuclear and war threats in the run-up to the US-North Korea summit. Is it Kim Jong Un’s new strategic vision that changed North Korea’s behavior recently? Or, is it just another deception to buy time for its nuclear weapons program? This Session aims to explore experts’ opinions on these questions.
