The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has unleashed an unprecedented global crisis, causing disruption to progress in achieving the SDGs. International development cooperation, which signifies global efforts to combat poverty and inequality, requires a new multilateral approach for the following three reasons. First, ever since the launch of the SDGs, there has been an increasing unilateral trend, including Brexit as well as the decoupling of the US and China, which threatens multilateralism In particular in the era of a pandemic. Second, the dynamics in the networked multilateral cooperation have become more complex, which traditionally only included state actors and multilateral institutions, but is rapidly expanding to embrace civil society and for-profit organizations to achieve human security. Third, revisiting and evaluating multilateralism in sustainable development is timely, given the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the UN, the 5th anniversary of the adoption of the SDGs, and domestically, the 10th anniversary of joining the OECD DAC. This session will discuss new visions for multilateralism from the perspective of development cooperation, particularly focusing on the role of East Asia.
