The Korean government has committed to transforming Jeju into a free international city in order to set a precedent for free market economy where the transfer of people, goods, and capital is free. The government has taken measures to enhance the competency of the city by authorizing a great deal of autonomy, mitigating regulations, and establishing a special act. However, the current level of the city’s internationalization is not satisfactory due to a limited range of foreign tourists, inefficient international trade, few international organizations, and a low foreign population. This session will serve as an opportunity to discuss directions toward further growth of Jeju by facilitating international exchanges.
