The North Korea-U.S. negotiation has been at an impasse since a failed agreement at the Hanoi summit in February in Hanoi. The U.S. continues to maintain the sanctions regime against North Korea sticking to its “grand bargain” approach while North Korea, with its phased approach, stresses the unfairness imposed by sanctions. On the one hand, there remains the expectation of narrowing the differences between the two sides through a possible resumption of dialogue and negotiation soon. On the other hand, concerns still linger over the prospect of prolonged deadlock. Against this backdrop, the role of the Republic of Korea is more crucial than ever to keep the momentum going for the peace process, facilitate the establishment of a peace regime, and achieve the goal of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. At this critical juncture, the Korea Institute for National Unification sets out to evaluate the progress of policy aimed at promoting denuclearization and a peace regime, assess the international environment, and have presentations and discussions to make policy recommendations for remaining tasks ahead at Jeju Forum in May.
