North Korea’s Developmental Model for Peace and Prosperity on the Korean Peninsula

A path toward peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula has increasingly become riddled with obstacles due to a combination of crises such as COVID-19 and the emergence of the new Cold War. In particular, establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula necessitates the linkage between a sustainable model for North Korea’s development and peace on the Korean Peninsula. It is also necessary to create conditions conducive to inclusive prosperity so that North Korea could find economic development, not nuclear development, more appealing admist aggravating low-development state of North Korea.
This session lays out the initial conditions for North Korea’s development via an analysis of changes in internal conditions and external environment and presents a sustainable developmental model suitable for such conditions. In addition, the session suggests measures for international cooperation that could link North Korea’s demands for development and the needs of neighboring countries as a discrepancy exists between the demands side of North Korea’s development (North Korea) and the needs (neighboring countries). In particular, ideas for detailed measures of cooperation are crafted in non-conventional security areas, such as the environment and health care, in which North Korea’s demands are met with the needs of neighboring countries.
