약력
서울대학교 외교학과에서 학사와 석사를 마친 후 일본 도쿄대학에서 국제관계학 박사 학위(1994)를 받았다. 미국 피츠버그대학 아시아연구소 방문연구원(2004년), 일본 도쿄대학 대학원 국제사회과학 전공 객원 교수(2005년), 도쿄대학 동양문화연구소 객원연구원(2013년)을 역임했다. 현대일본학회 회장과 한국국제정치학회 부회장, 한일신시대 공동연구(2009-12)의 한국 측 간사를 역임했다. 1998년부터 현재까지 국민대학교 일본학과 교수로 재직 중이며 국민대학교 일본학 연구소장(2008-2018)을 역임했다. 『일본공간』의 편집인이다. 외교부, 통일부, 민주평통, 동북아역사재단 민주평통 등의 자문위원을 역임했다. 전공 분야는 일본정치외교, 동북아 국제관계이며 특히 한일관계 및 한일외교사에 대한 실증적인 분석에 관심을 집중하고 있다. 최근의 논저로는 『일본, 한국을 상상하다』 (공저, 2021) 『한일관계: 무엇이 문제이고 어떻게 풀어야 하나』 (공저) 2020) 등이 있다.
After completing his bachelor's degree and master's degree in diplomacy at Seoul National University, he received a doctorate in international relations from Tokyo University in Japan(1994). He was a visiting scholar at the Asian Studies Center of the University of Pittsburgh in 2004 and a visiting researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Asia of the University of Tokyo in 2013. He served as the chairman of the Korean Association of Contemporary Japanese Studies, the vice president of the Korean Association of International Studies, and the Korean executive secretary of the Korea-Japan New Era Joint Research (2009-12). From 1998 to the present, he has been a professor of Japanese studies at Kookmin University and the head of the Japanese Studies Research Institute at Kookmin University (2008-2018). He is also the editor of Japan Space. He served as an advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Unification, the National Unification Advisory Council, and the Northeast Asian History Foundation. He specializes in Japanese political diplomacy and Northeast Asian international relations, and his area of interest is focused on the empirical analysis of Korea-Japan relations and Korea-Japan diplomatic history. His recent papers include “Imagining Japan and Korea” (Co-authored, 2021) and “Korea-Japan Relations: What is the problem and how to solve it” (Co-authored, 2020).
