Mafael studied law in Heidelberg and Berlin and worked as prosecutor in Mannheim before he joined the German foreign ministry. He worked at the European Commission in Brussels, dealing with East Asia relations and was part of the German mission to the EU-Commission. He was assigned to Korea in July 2012.
