FORUM

The 7th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity reviewed these changes within historic context and highlight the future of Asia. The work of the forum was to pursue peace and common prosperity of the region on the basis of a sense of community. The interdependence and cultural fusion in Asia are surely contribute to the promotion of this sense of community. The issue of common prosperity was addressed and the potentiality of new growth on the basis of Asian entrepreneurship was explored. New growth engines, future of the IT industry, environmental conservation, sustainable management, financial cooperation, official development assistance, welfare expansion, city design, and the role of women are among the forum's topic.

Korea emerged as a major nuclear energy power state through the successful operation of its 21 reactors and nuclear reactor exports to UAE. Now that, the importance of nuclear energy is expected to increase for sustainable economic development.

Currently, the two nations are engaged in the process of negotiations for the amendment of the ROK-U.S. nuclear cooperation agreement - set to expire in 2014, in order to create a future-oriented and mutually beneficial ROK-U.S. partnership for nuclear cooperation, recognizing the increased stature of the ROK which has made remarkable advancements in its nuclear industry and related technology in the past 40 years.

In this session, we hope to provide an opportunity for meaningful discussions on the goals the new ROK-U.S. nuclear cooperation agreement should aim for, effective solutions for spent fuel management, and measures to strengthen international nonproliferation regimes, etc., with experts in the field of nuclear energy from the ROK and the U.S.

우리나라는 원전 21기 운영 및 UAE 원전 수출 등을 통해 원자력 강국으로 부상하였으며, 앞으로도 지속적인 경제성장을 위해 원자력 에너지는 더욱 중요해질 것으로 예상됩니다. 특히, 한미 양국은 2014년 만료되는 한미 원자력협정 개정을 통해 지난 40여 년간 원자력 산업과 기술 발전을 이룩한 한국의 위상을 토대로 양국간 상호호혜적이고 미래지향적인 원자력협력의 틀을 마련코자 협상을 진행하고 있습니다.

이번 세션에서는 한미 양국의 원자력 권위자들을 초빙하여 새로운 한미 원자력협정이 지향해야 할 목표, 사용 후 핵연료 처분을 위한 효과적 대안, 국제 비확산레짐 강화 방안 등에 대해 토론하는 시간을 갖고자 합니다.
