Biography

Before joining Graduate School of International Relations of Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, SHIMADA Haruyuki worked for Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for almost 20 years and was seconded to the World Bank for two years. In JICA, he was in charge of infrastructure projects mainly in Asia region, economic policy formulation programs in Vietnam, Lao PDR and Myanmar, and coordinating country programs for Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Myanmar. In addition, Shimada was stationed in JICA Afghanistan office from 2006-2008 as a deputy resident representative and coordinated assistance program for Afghanistan from 2011-2014 in JICA HDQs. He has also over 10 years of experience in education and research in some Japanese universities and the American University in Washington, DC. His research field is wide-ranging on development, but since working in Afghanistan, he has been conducting research and publishing papers on measures to support state reconstruction & building and surveys of refugees and displaced persons who have fled the country (Afghanistan) due to conflict.
