Biography

Ambassador LEE Su-Hoon is a Visiting Chair Professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University in South Korea. He served as the 23rd Ambassador to Japan from October 2017 to May 2019. Ambassador Lee holds a bachelor's degree in English Literature from Pusan National University. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology and International Political Economy from Johns Hopkins University. Ambassador LEE’s career is distinguished by his expertise in Korean-Japanese relations and contributions to diplomacy and academia. He has served as Chairman of the Northeast Asia Initiative Committee, Advisor on foreign affairs and Security for the Roh Moo-hyun government, and President of the Korean Association for Comparative Sociology. He has consistently emphasized dialogue and cooperation between East Asian nations during diplomatic tension. During his tenure as Ambassador, Lee advocated for a "two-track" diplomacy approach, which aimed to separate economic and security issues in Korea-Japan relations. He also focused on resolving historical disputes and peacefully addressing maritime and territorial conflicts. Since his ambassadorship, he has continued to influence discussions on Korean-Japan relations through lectures, publications, and participation in international symposiums.
