Under the banner of “America First”, the Trump administration imposes reciprocal and item-specific tariffs on countries around the world aiming to resolve trade imbalances with individual countries, and revive American manufacturing. At the same time it implements active policies to attract foreign companies to invest in the US. The Trump administration’s economic policies are affecting the international free trade order and global supply chains, functioning as a turning point to reshape the global economic system. In addition, the “America First” investment policy presents important considerations for each country’s domestic industries and economic restructuring. At this Jeju Forum, Senior Fellow Jeffrey Schott from the PIIE will present an overview of the key features of the Trump administration’s trade and economic policies. Following his presentation, session participants will share their views on the impact of these policies on their respective countries and potential policy responses. This discussion is expected to provide meaningful insights that will help governments, including South Korea to formulate more strategic approaches.
