The women divers start to learn swimming in shallow seas, called aegibadang, at the age eight and spend their whole life at sea until retiring at halmangbadang (the sea zone for senior divers). The Jeju haenyeo, a representative example of sustainable, eco-friendly seafood gathering, were registered as one of the Intan-gible Cultural Heritages of UNESCO in December 2016. This session will examine tasks to keep and glo-balize the haenyeo culture, a treasured heritage of the island.
