Of the many pledges that catapulted Donald Trump to the White House, minimization of the U.S. role in the international economy and pursuit of protectionist trade policies are the ones that have significant implications for the prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region. Trump has withdrawn from TPP without delay, and he has also insisted on the renegotiation of several FTAs, including NAFTA and TTIP, as well as the readjustment of existing tariffs and regulations. This session examines the geopolitical impact that the Trump Administration will have on the regional economic integration of the Asia-Pacific region, given Trump’s assessment of the U.S. role in sustaining liberalized economic and trade relations in the world economy to have been “overreach.” In addition, this session attempts to analyze whether China will be able to replace the U.S. leadership in trade liberalization in the Asia-Pacific region by propelling forward the conclusion of regional trade agreements under negotiations, including RCEP and FTAAP.
