Many had expected the North Korean regime to collapse after Kim Il-sung died in 1994. However, it did not and Kim Jong-il successfully consolidated his power. Similarly, many believed that the North Korean regime was going to disappear when Kim Jong-il died in 2011. Once again, Kim Jong-un quickly consolidated his power and it remains intact till this day. Why and how is the North Korean regime so resilient? What are its strategies in this regard? How effective is its internal security apparatus? How does it maintain the loyalty of its supporters? Most importantly, how does it formulate important policies, both foreign and domestic? Experts in this session will discuss the North Korean regime’s dynamics.
