Today’s international order is undergoing significant changes. Look at the new US administration’s ‘America First’ isolationist policy, rising China’s greater assertiveness and intensifying competition among major powers, Russia’s revanchist politics, Japan’s history revisionism, Brexit, emerging new nationalism and, above all, eroding commitment to a rules-based international order and multilateralism. All these changes present us with hyper uncertainties and multidimensional challenges. This symposium will analyze the characteristics of the current international order and discuss new challenges they impose on international peace in Asia and the common interests of humanity. Focusing on major issues drawing much international attention, particularly in East Asia, it aims to identify desirable approaches to international peace to effectively address the challenges facing the world including through reinvigorated United Nations’ efforts and multilateralism.
