The year 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan. The "Treaty on Basic Relations between the Republic of Korea and Japan" (hereafter the Korea-Japan Basic Treaty), signed on June 22, 1965, was a crucial first step in resolving the historical conflicts between the two nations stemming from Japan's colonial rule and served as an important milestone in normalizing their relationship. Despite the continuous efforts of Korea and Japan to advance their bilateral relations based on the treaty, challenges still remain.

This session aims to examine the development of Korea–Japan relations since the signing of the Korea–Japan Basic Treaty in 1965, review key achievements and challenges that have emerged over time, and propose policy recommendations to help shape a more constructive future for Korea and Japan.
