China, Japan, and the ROK (the three countries) have deep experience with nuclear energy and large commercial nuclear power sectors, and nuclear power is expected to expand. It is estimated that almost one-third of the world’s nuclear power plants will be concentrated in Northeast Asia by 2030. Nuclear power is related to one country’s economic growth and closely linked with its social stability and, most importantly, people’s daily lives. In recent years, especially after the Fukushima Daiichi accident, the public began to pay more attention to the safe use of nuclear power. People must ensure that nuclear power plants and other facilities are operated safely. The three countries have been cooperating on nuclear safety since 2008 by holding the annual Top Regulators Meeting (TRM) on Nuclear Safety. After the Fukushima accident, the three countries attached more importance to TRM and have made greater efforts to strengthen relevant cooperation.
Based on the existing cooperation, this session invites officials and experts from the three countries to introduce various efforts on nuclear safety to provide more clear and useful information to the general public. The speakers will also share good practices for developing a nuclear safety culture and suggest practical ideas to strengthen trilateral cooperation on nuclear safety.
