The world is currently facing a confluence of complex crises, including armed conflicts, the climate crises, digital transformation, and the restructuring of the global economic order. These challenges cannot be addressed by the capacity of any single nation alone and require collective cooperation and coordination by the international community.

For the past 80 years, the United Nations (UN) has served as the central pillar of multilateral cooperation in responding to interconnected global challenges. It continues to be expected to function as the most effective and inclusive platform for coordinating joint action across the international community.

However, in recent years, the UN has faced growing criticism regarding its decision-making structure and political limitations. Questions have been raised about its effectiveness and legitimacy due to the Security Council’s inaction, conflicting interests among member states, and inadequate responsiveness to urgent global issues.

Despite these concerns, the UN remains the most inclusive and legitimate multilateral institution, with a unique capacity to bring together a wide range of countries and stakeholders and provide a platform for dialogue and negotiation. Furthermore, the UN is actively seeking a renewed form of multilateralism to address the challenges of our time and is making continued efforts to restore and strengthen international cooperation.

This session aims to reaffirm the enduring relevance of the United Nations and explore practical strategies for the revitalization and renewal of multilateralism.
