Biography

Dr. Marty NATALEGAWA is a career diplomat who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia (2009–2014). Throughout his career, he has held pivotal roles, including Ambassador to the U.N., the U.K., and Ireland.
Within ASEAN, he was instrumental in developing the ASEAN Community and its associated processes, including the East Asia Summit, and played an active role in managing various potentials for conflicts in the region. His international influence extends to the United Nations, where he served in various capacities including on the Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation and as President of the Security Council. In addition to more three-decade long contributions to diplomacy, he is an accomplished academic and author. He inter alia wrote "Does ASEAN Matter? A view from Within" and co-authored works on geopolitics and the Indonesian economy. He currently holds several positions, including initiator of the Amity Circle with its focus on the promotion of diplomacy, Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Leaders Network (APLN) for nuclear non-proliferation, Professor at NTU, Singapore, and faculty member at Georgetown University SFS Asia Pacific. Dr. NATALEGAWA remains a leading global voice in diplomacy, disarmament, and Asia-Pacific security.
