Biography

Ambassador CHOI Sung-Joo, who served as a career diplomat for 38 years starting in 1980, held various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Director for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Division, Deputy Director General for International Organizations Department, Ambassador for International Security Affairs, and Ambassador for Performance Evaluation. In addition, Ambassador CHOI served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Algeria and Poland (concurrently, serving to Lithuania). He was in charge of global disarmament and non-proliferation, cyber security, and emerging security issues, while serving as Member of the U.N. Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (2012–2017) and as Head of the Preparatory Secretariat for Seoul Cyberspace Conference (2013). Since 2019, Ambassador CHOI has served as Head for Int’l Cooperation and Foreign Affairs at the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future, while also working as Visiting Professor at School of Cybersecurity, Korea University. After graduating from the Department of French Language and Literature at Seoul National University, he majored in Public International Law at Law School, University Paris XI in France.
