Akiko Horiyama was born in Tokyo and joined the Mainichi Newspapers in 1991. She served in the Evening Feature News Department and the Politics Department, the Foreign News Department, mainly to cover Foreign Affairs and international exchange in East Asia. She is currently Seoul Bureau Chief after working as a correspondent in Seoul from 2004 to 2009, and in Los Angeles from 2011 to 2015.
