Biography

Ambassador Carlos D. Sorreta is the Philippine Ambassador to Russia. Before this, he was Director-General of the Foreign Service Institute. Ambassador Sorreta was a Special Assistant to the President and several Foreign Affairs Secretaries. He was Assistant Secretary for American Affairs and has headed the following divisions: Treaties, Southeast Asia, United States, and Pacific. He was the Deputy Permanent Representative at the Philippine Mission to the United Nations in New York. He was also the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Philippine Embassy in Washington. At the UN, he chaired the Special Committee on the Charter, was Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Disarmament and International Security, and Vice-President of the Disarmament Commission. He has been the Philippine Sherpa to the Nuclear Security Summit Process. He also appeared before the International Court of Justice for the Philippines in the Advisory Opinion on the Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons.
Ambassador Sorreta has had specialized training in international law and diplomacy, including a UN Fellowship in International Law at Columbia Law School and the Hague Academy of International Law External Program. Ambassador Sorreta was on the faculty of several colleges and universities in the Philippines.
