Jay LEE is the Documentation Commissioner of the May 18 Memorial Foundation. As a journalist, based on his experience of participating in the 5.18 Democratisation movement (occured in Gwangju between May 18-27, 1980) in 1985, he wrote a book “Beyond the Death, Beyond the Darkness of the Era”, documenting the reality of the Gwangju uprising for the first time in the history. Although at that time, it was published under the name of a well-known novelist, Seok-Young HWANG, he was listed as a co-author for the edition in 2017. The book was a catalyst for the June Democratic uprising in 1987 as it was issued under the Chun Do-Hwan military regime. After that, Jay Lee has taken the lead in the truth-seeking of the distorted May 18 through various writings.


이재의 5.18기념재단 자료위원은 저널리스트 출신이다. 1985년 5.18민주화운동에 직접 참가했던 경험을 바탕으로 광주항쟁의 실상을 최초로 기록한 죽음을 넘어 시대의 어둠을 넘어』를 집필하였다. 당시 이 책은 저명한 소설가 황석영의 이름으로 출간됐으나 2017년 전면개정판에서는 공동집필자로 이름을 밝혔다. 이 책은 엄혹했던 전두환 군사정권 시기인 1985년에 발간되어 1987년 ‘6월민주항쟁’의 기폭제가 되었다. 그 후에도 이재의는 다양한 글쓰기를 통해 왜곡된 5.18의 진실규명에 앞장서고 있다.
