Jay Lee is the Documentation Commissioner of the May 18 Memorial Foundation. As a journalist, based on his experience of participating in the 5.18 Democratisation movement (occurred in Gwangju between May 18-27, 1980) in 1985, he wrote a book “Beyond the Death, Beyond the Darkness of the Era”, documenting the reality of the Gwangju uprising for the first time in history. Although at that time, it was published under the name of a well-known novelist, Seok-Young HWANG, he was listed as a co-author for the edition in 2017. The book was a catalyst for the June Democratic uprising in 1987, as it was issued under the Chun Do-Hwan military regime. After that, Jay Lee has taken the lead in the truth-seeking of the distorted May 18 through various writings.
