Biography

Dr. Myeongguk Cheon is currently working at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses(KIDA) as an ROK army officer. His research interests are mainly North Korea’s military issues derived from WMD threats such as nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and ballistic missiles. Deterrence, protection, countermeasures, consequence management, and arms control are also included in his research scope. Dr. CHEON’s military careers cover WMD-related policy planning and implementation for the Ministry of National Defense(MND) and providing nuclear-related technical assistance and expertise for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs(MOFA) in pursuit of the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. He has participated in various ROK-US security-related consultations, such as the Extended Deterrence Policy Committee(EDPC), Deterrence Strategy Committee(DSC), and Bio-Defense Task Force(BDTF), mainly dealing with North Korea’s WMD threats. From 2012 to 2014, he was in charge of planning and organizing a ROK-US Joint Bio-Defense Exercise, named Able Response(AR), for the improvement of national bio-defense capability.
Dr CHEON’s academic background is mainly in science and engineering, a BS in physics, an MS, and A PhD in nuclear engineering.
