Biography

Dr. Austin Shelton is an assistant professor of extension and outreach in the UOG (University of Guam) Sea Grant Program. He is also the Executive Director of the UOG Center for Island Sustainability. Additionally, Shelton coordinates education, outreach, and diversity activities as a co-principal investigator in the UOG Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program funded by the National Science Foundation. He conducts community-based research aimed at reviving watersheds, coral reefs, and fisheries. Shelton is a lead researcher in the Guam Restoration of Watersheds (GROW) Initiative, where he develops tools to reduce land erosion and its effects on downstream coral reefs. He served on the national Board of Directors of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and completed the 2017 Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
