Biography

MIENO Fumiharu is a professor of economics and the former director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University. His primary research areas include the financial system and economic development, the financial sector in Southeast Asia, and the economies of Southeast Asia, Thailand, and the Indochina countries. His notable publications include Economic Transition in Myanmar After 1988 (NUS Press, 2009); Financial Reform and Southeast Asia (in Japanese, Keiso Shobo, 2015; the Ohira Memorial Award); “Impact of Foreign Entry into the Banking Sector: The Case of Thailand in 1999–2014” PBFJ, 2020.
He have served as a board member of the Japan Association for Asian Studies (as vice president), the East Asian Economic Association, and the Japan Association for International Development. He has also led various research and dialogue programs for Japanese Government on Myanmar and Laos.
He obtained a Bachelor of Social Studies in 1992 and a Ph.D. in Economics in 1999, both from Hitotsubashi University. Prior to his current position, he worked as an associate professor at Hosei University, and a professor at Kobe University. He was also a visiting faculty member at Thammasat University and Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and Columbia University in the U.S.
