Biography

CHOI Young Jun is a Professor at the Department of Public Policy and Management. He is currently a Department Chair and Director of the Institute for Welfare State Research, Yonsei University. He previously worked at the University of Oxford (2006-7), the University of Bath (2007-9), and Korea University (2009-15). He served as the Chair of East Asian Social Policy Research Network (2021-2023) and the President of the Academy of the Critical Social Welfare (2024). He has always been interested in how public policy can promote people’s freedom, security, capability, and happiness. His research interests include ageing and public policy including pensions and social care, social investment policy, innovation and social policy, and comparative welfare states. Recently, he also extends his interest to the third sector and civil society. He edited a special issue ‘Social Investment in the Knowledge-based Economy: New Politics and Policies (Policy and Society, 2020)’ with Professor Evelyne Huber and also edited a book, ‘Welfare Reform and Social Investment Policy in Europe and East Asia (Policy Press, 2021)’. He has extensively published his studies in international journals including the Journal of European Social Policy, Policy and Society, Policy and Politics, and Ageing and Society.
