Biography

Mr. Southcott is a visiting professor within the Office of International Affairs at Jeju National University, where he teaches courses on global citizenship, sustainable development, and intercultural understanding, among others. Mr. Southcott’s Ph.D. thesis (2024) through the University of Leicester, UK, was on Internationally Designated Areas (IDAs) such as UNESCO sites within Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. He received his M.A. in Education for Sustainable Development from London South Bank University (2012) and his M.Sc. in Human Rights from the University of London (2011). As part of his experience in the sustainable development field, he has worked as a policy analyst with NGOs in the Southeast Asian region relating to issues such as education, human rights, climate change, and sustainable development. While living in the Lao PDR, he also worked with KOICA as a researcher and policy analyst in addition to the Prime Minister’s Office of the Lao PDR as a social researcher. Mr. Southcott developed his deep interest in sustainable development policies on Jeju Island after covering rapid development on the island in his role as editor-in-chief of The Jeju Weekly, an English-language newspaper based in Jeju City, between 2013 and 2016. Mr. Southcott also taught pedagogy for six years at Jeju National University of Education (2016-2022).
