Biography
DR. RADEN MOHAMMAD MARTY MULIANA NATALEGAWA KCMG served
as Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia between 2009 - 2014. He began his
career with the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in 1986.
As Foreign Minister, he oversaw Indonesia’s emergence as a regional power with global
responsibilities.
In 2011, under Indonesia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN, Indonesia inter alia initiated the
Bali Concord III; the expansion of the East Asia Summit (EAS) to include the Russian
Federation and the United States of America; the adoption of the “Bali Principles” which
provide for peaceful settlement of disputes and the repudiation of use of force or the
threat of use of force amongst the countries of the EAS.
Dr. Natalegawa served as Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the UN in New York
(2007-2009), coinciding with Indonesia’s membership of the Security Council.
During that time he served, among others, as President of the Security Council in
November 2007 and as Chair of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization. He also
led Indonesia’s delegation at various multilateral negotiations, both within the UN and
beyond.
Between 2005 and 2007 he served as Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the
Court of St. James and Ireland.
From 2002 to 2005, he served as Chief of Staff of the Office of the Minister of Foreign
Affairs; Director General for ASEAN Cooperation; and Spokesperson of the Department
of Foreign Affairs. The period coincided with Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN,
marked by the ASEAN Community initiative, which was formally endorsed by the
member countries through the 2003 Bali Concord II.
Among various other assignments, Dr. Marty Natalegawa also served as Director for
International Organizations at the Department of Foreign Affairs.
He also served at the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the UN in New York between
1994 and 1999, including during Indonesia’s membership of the Security Council in
1996-1997.
Dr. Marty Natalegawa was awarded the Satyalancana Wira Karya medal from the
Government of the Republic of Indonesia in 2011. On 17 August 2014, he was awarded
the Bintang Mahaputra Adipradana medal. The medals are awarded to individuals for
their service to the nation.
In November 2012, he was made Honourary Knight Commander of the Order of St.
Michael and St. George (KCMG) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
In 2013, the Foreign Policy Magazine included Dr. Natalegawa among the list of 500
most influential individuals.
Among other activities, he recently served as a member of the United Nations Secretary-
General High Level Panel on Global Response to Health Crises. He is also currently
serving as Asia Society Policy Institute Distinguished Fellow; as a member of the
International Academic Advisory Committee of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies;
the Southeast Asia Advisory Board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies
(CSIS); International Crisis Group Board of Trustees and as non-executive independent
director/commissioner of publicly listed companies.
Dr. Natalegawa earned a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) degree from the Australian
National University in 1993; a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree from the Corpus
Christi College, University of Cambridge in 1985; and a BSc (Hons) from the London
School of Economics and Political Science in 1984.
He attended the Ellesmere College and Concord College in the United Kingdom between
1976-1981.
Dr. Natalegawa has received several Doctorate Honoris Causa for his services.
