Biography

Frank AUM is the senior expert on Northeast Asia at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He oversees the Institute’s work on Northeast Asia, focusing on ways to strengthen diplomacy to reduce tensions and enhance peace on the Korean Peninsula. From 2010 to 2017, he worked at the Department of Defense as a special assistant to the assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs and as a senior advisor on the Korean Peninsula in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. During this time, he advised four defense secretaries on issues related to the Korean Peninsula. AUM also served as head of the delegation for working-level negotiations with South Korea on revised missile guidelines and the transition from wartime operational control and received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service. His work has been published and cited in Foreign Affairs, New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, Newsweek, War on the Rocks, Arms Control Today, Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, and 38 North. He serves on the advisory committee for the National Committee on North Korea. Mr. AUM completed a Fulbright Scholarship in Jeju Island, South Korea.
