Biography
Dr. Yuko NAKAJIMA is an Emergency Physician and Anesthesiologist currently serving as President of MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières) Japan. She recently worked in Gaza from 14 November to 7 December 2023, as a member of the first Emergency response team entering after 7 October 2023.
Since 2010, she has been working with MSF in the field on eight separate field assignments to Syria twice, Yemen, Pakistan, Iraq, South Sudan, Nigeria, and Gaza. She has also done field visits in Ukraine, Afghanistan and Malawi.
Dr. NAKAJIMA is Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine (Associate Professor effective 1 September 2024). She is Faculty of the Section of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine and the Section of Global Health. She also serves as Medical Director of Metro Atlanta Ambulance Service.
She holds medical licenses both in the US and Japan. After graduating medical school and training as an Anesthesiologist in Japan, she obtained the USMLE (US Medical License Exam) and completed an Emergency Medicine residency at Yale, then an EMS (Emergency Medical Services) / Disaster Medicine fellowship at UC San Diego. She remains actively involved with Emergency Medicine and EMS development in Japan. She has also recently been onboarded on US DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) GA-3 team.
