Biography

KOH Hyeon Su was born in 1966 on Jeju Island and has been active for over 30 years in promoting the rights and welfare of people with disabilities. He served as a member of the 11th Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Council and is currently the director of the Tamna Welfare Center for the Disabled and the chairman of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Human Rights Committee. He has previously held positions as the permanent representative of the Jeju Disability Rights Forum, the permanent representative of the Jeju Human Rights Organizations Council, and the co-representative of the Jeju Civic Organizations Coalition. In the early 2000s, he contributed to the start of the disability independent living movement in Jeju, focusing on self-determination and social environmental changes, providing a theoretical and practical foundation. He has led the drafting of various policies in Jeju based on the philosophy of independent living. His contributions also include the introduction and expansion of universal design in the region through social design. For these achievements, he has received awards such as the Korea Human Rights Award, the Disability Welfare Activist Award, and the Universal Design Award. Koh is known for his rich sensitivity to human rights and his logical and driving force in initiatives.
