Biography

Dr. Robin WEST is Associate Professor in Sociology at London Metropolitan University, UK. He holds a B.A. (Hons) in Philosophy and Sociology and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Essex, UK. He is currently completing a British Academy/Leverhulme Trust-funded project exploring aspects of dark tourism in South Korea in which the multi-layered activities surrounding the memorialization of Jeju 4ยท3 play a central role. He is particularly interested in how the South Korean case offers an opportunity to explore the intersections of cultures of remembrance and memory at the subjective level, and how encountering violent events that are distant in both time and space can be understood as affective and formative ground for development of the ethical self.
