Biography

Mr. Bong-hyun KIM passed High Diplomatic Service Examination in 1982. In 2000, he served as the Director, United Nations Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT). He served in the office of the President of the UNGA as an advisor to the President from 2001 to 2002 and his career includes Advisor to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, then-Minister from 2004 until 2005. He served as Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Korean Permanent Mission to the United Nations from 2008 to 2011, and thereafter became Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs, MOFAT in 2011. He also served as Sherpa for the Nuclear Security Summit held in Seoul in 2012. He was appointed in 2013 as Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Australia and served until May 2016.
After retirement in 2016, he taught in the Jeju National University and he became President of the Jeju Peace Institute in 2018 and joined in the Ban Ki-moon Foundation in December 2020.
He obtained his Ph.D. from Dongguk University in 2009. He received the Order of Service Merit of the President in 2007.
