Biography

Steven Hamilton has been with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) since 1999, starting in North Macedonia during the Kosovo crisis. Since then, he has held positions with IOM in Senegal, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Indonesia, and Norway, before joining IOM Seoul in December 2020. Mr. Hamilton holds a Masters in Maritime Security with a focus on transnational crime at sea, particularly people smuggling and human trafficking. Mr. Hamilton acts as IOM's principal interlocutor with the Government of the Republic of Korea, as well as relevant ministries, diplomatic representatives, UN Agencies, and other organizations in the country. He is also responsible for liaising with government agencies regarding the full range of IOM’s migration related services, as well as addressing relevant government concerns and programmatic developments. During his planned tenure in the Republic of Korea, he will further develop and implement IOM's Strategic Vision and IOM’s role within the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus, focusing on the relationship between migration and development, especially within the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, he aims to focus on the plight of labor migrants in the Republic of Korea, striving for greater accountability in supply chains involving Korean companies.
