Biography

For the last twenty years, I have worked within eastern hemisphere waters, leading and collaborating on projects in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Australia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and East Timor. I have worked on a variety of species, particularly Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and finless porpoise and I am considered a specialist in these coastal populations. I also work on larger whales that migrate to and from Asian waters, particularly blue whales. I have extensive fieldwork experience using a variety of marine mammal research tools including visual and acoustic monitoring; aerial surveys (drones, helicopters and fixed wing); biopsy collection and tag attachment; satellite imagery to monitor remote oceanic areas. I am an active member of regional and international conservation fora, including the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group, the Convention Migratory Species Aquatic Animal Working Group, the Society for Marine Mammalogy (Board); Asian Marine Mammal Stranding Network (Research Committee), Society of Conservation Biology (JEDI Officer) and the International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee (Vice-Chair). I am also an Associate Editor for the Journal of Conservation and Research Management. In 2023, I was awarded the title Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for my contribution to global marine conservation.
