Biography

Dr. Hyung-Gon Jeong graduated from the University of Bonn and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Cologne. He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
He has been working as a member of the Presidential Committee for Unification Preparation for Korea, Vice President of the North East Asia Economic Association of Korea, and a member of the Policy Advisory Committee of Korea Fair Trade Commission. He serves as an Advisor at the Committee of Free Economic Zone of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. He has participated in the Korea-China-Japan Joint Research Project as a Research Fellow from 2010 to 2011 and conducted joint research projects with IDE-JETRO (Japan) and DRC (China) from 2006 to 2010. He also served as a Consultant of Special Economic Zone for the governments of Vietnam, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan as part of the Korean knowledge-sharing projects. Before joining KIEP, Dr. Jeong was Director General of the Office of Strategic Planning at the National Security Council (NSC), the Blue House. Dr. Jeong has published many refereed journal articles, books, and working papers on international economics, including trade and investment, transition economy, and North Korean economy, etc. He can be reached at hgjeong@kiep.go.kr.
