- Graduated in Economics, Technical University of Lisbon (1964).
- Ph.D. in Economics, University of York, England (1973).
- Research fellow, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation(1966-1977).
- President of the National Planning Council (1981-1984).
- Professor, Faculty of Economics, Technical University of Lisbon (1966-1978), Faculty of Economics of the New University of Lisbon (1978-2001), and School of Economics and Business Administration at the Catholic University of Portugal (1976-2006).
- Head of the Research and Statistics Department of the Bank of Portugal (1977-1985).
- Economic Adviser to the Bank of Portugal (1996-2004).

<Prizes And Distinctions>
- Awarded with the Prize Joseph Bech (1991) for his contribution to European construction; Freedom Prize from Schmidheiny Foundation (1995) for his activity as economist and politician; Carl Bertelsmann Prize from Bertelsmann Foundation (1995) for the results achieved by Portugal in the fight against unemployment; Robert Schuman Medal (1998) for his contribution to the European construction; the "Mediterranean Award for Institutions 2009" by the Fondazione Mediterraneo, in recognition of his commitment towards the strengthening of solidarity and for an effective cooperation among all the countries of the Mediterranean, to achieve the development and to promote the peace in the Region.
