Biography
Il Lee, an attorney at law, has been working as a full-time non-profit, public interest lawyer at Advocates for Public Interest Law (APIL). His work focuses on advocating for the rights of vulnerable asylum seekers and immigrant detainees in Korea mainly through legal advocacy. For many years, he has led many precedent judgments and decisions in the refugee recognition process, access to attorneys, and release from unlawful detention of asylum seekers at airports and domestically, and has also achieved good results in several strategic litigation cases. He is concentrating on improving the system, such as refugee acts and refugee recognition procedures, and improving citizens' awareness of refugees. He is the current chair of the Korea Refugee Rights Network and former chair of the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network's East Asian Working Group. Il Lee graduated with a B.A in Law from Seoul National University. After completing the courses of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, he served Navy as a Military Advocate, and was admitted into the Korea Bar Association in 2013."
