Biography

조희경은 1961년 2월 4일 한국 서울에서 태어났고 현재 동물자유연대의 대표이다. 2000 년에 동물자유연대를 설립하여 활동하고 있으며 한국의 대표적인 동물운동가이다. 강아지 공장 및 개고기 금지, 암탉의 케이지 프리, 사육곰 구조 등을 적극적으로 펼치고 있으며, 수족관에 갇힌 7마리 남방큰돌고래 방류 캠페인도 성공적으로 이끌어 한국의 돌고래 전시업을 사양화 하는 데에 큰 기여를 했다. 정부와 국회 등 다양한 곳에서 자문 활동을 하면서 동물법을 증진시키는 데에도 전력하고 있다. 이러한 기여를 인정받아 대통령표창(2016), 장관 표창(농림축산식품부2011, 해양수산부2015)을 받았다.

"Hee Kyung Jo was born on February 4th, 1961 in Seoul, Korea and is one of the country’s most well-known animal activists. In 2000, she founded the Korean Animal Welfare Association (KAWA) and as its current president she has been advocating for the rights of animals for over 20 years.
She has been actively fighting to ban the dog meat trade and to shut down puppy mills in Korea. Her other accomplishments include cage-free campaigns for laying hens and a sanctuary project for moon bears. In addition, she successfully led the Release Seven Dolphins campaign which contributed to the decline of the Korean dolphin exhibition industry. She also advises various organizations including governmental agencies and the National Assembly.
In recognition of all her contributions, she was awarded a presidential commendation(2016) and ministerial commendations (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs 2011, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries 2015)."
