Biography

After completing his bachelor's degree and master's degree in diplomacy at Seoul National University, Prof. Lee, Won Deoghe received a doctorate in international relations from Tokyo University in Japan(1994). He was a visiting scholar at the Asian Studies Center of the University of Pittsburgh in 2004 and a visiting researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Asia of the University of Tokyo in 2013. He served as the chairman of the Korean Association of Contemporary Japanese Studies, the vice president of the Korean Association of International Studies, and the Korean executive secretary of the Korea-Japan New Era Joint Research (2009-12). From 1998 to the present, he has been a professor of Japanese studies at Kookmin University and the head of the Japanese Studies Research Institute at Kookmin University (2008-2018). He is also the editor of Japan Space. He served as an advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Unification, the National Unification Advisory Council, and the Northeast Asian History Foundation. He specializes in Japanese political diplomacy and Northeast Asian international relations, and his area of interest is focused on the empirical analysis of Korea-Japan relations and Korea-Japan diplomatic history. His recent papers include “Imagining Japan and Korea” (Co-authored, 2021) and “Korea-Japan Relations: What is the problem and how to solve it” (Co-authored, 2020).
