Biography
이희수는 한국외대를 졸업하고 이스탄불 국립대학에서 역사학 박사를 취득한 중동-이슬람문화 국내 최고 권위자이다. 이스탄불 마르마라대학 조교수, 미국 워싱턴대, 비엔나대 방문교수를 역임했다. 현재 한양대 문화인류학과 명예교수, 성공회대 이슬람문화연구소 소장, 계명대 특임교수로 있다. 사우디아라비아, 튀니지, 이란, 우즈베키스탄, 이집트 등지에서 40여년간 현장연구를 수행했으며 터키에만 167번을 다녀왔다. 국내저서 90권, 외국어 저술 12권이 있다. <이슬람과 한국문화>는 한국어, 영어, 이란어, 아랍어, 터키어로 출간되어 이 분야 고전으로 읽히고 있다. < 이희수의 이슬람>은 25만권, <어린이 이슬람>은 12만권이 팔린 초베스트 인문학 저서이고 최근에는 인류사를 서양사와 동양사가 아닌 보다 보편적인 눈으로 보자는 <인류본사>를 출간하여 학계와 우리사회에서 큰 반응을 얻고 있다.
Lee Hee-soo is the nation's top authority on Middle East-Islamic culture, graduating from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and earning a Ph.D in Islamic history from The Istanbul University. He was an assistant professor at Marmara University in Istanbul and a visiting professor at the University of Washington and the University of Vienna. Currently, he is an Emeritus Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Hanyang University, Director of the Islamic Culture Research Institute at SungKongHoe University, and Distinguished Professor at Keimyung University.
