Biography

Egon L. van den Broek (1974) received an MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI) (2001), a PhD in Social Sciences (2005), and a second PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science (2011). Currently, he is associate professor with ius promovendi at Utrecht University, the Netherlands and high-level expert on AI and data for the European Commission. Van den Broek is a frequent public speaker, conference chair, keynote/invited speaker, advisory board member, and recipient of 25 awards. He is Editor-in-Chief of Open Computer Science, Senior Associate Editor of ACM Computing Surveys, Associate Editor Frontiers in Human-Media Interaction and editorial board member of Signals and Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments. Van den Broek heads an international research group that runs multiple externally funded projects in close cooperation with industry. Currently, he supervises 8 PhD-students and 3 MSc-students. His group works on real-time intelligent data-driven interaction, primarily in the domains of health and well-being and resulted in 6 patents, multiple systems and >180 publications such as in Nature Computational Science.
