Biography
박경애교수는 캐나다 University of British Columbia (UBC) 대학의 정치학교수로 School of Public Policy and Global Affairs에서 Korea Foundation Chair와《캐나다-북한 지식교류협력프로그램》(Canada-DPRK Knowledge Partnership Program, KPP)의 창립소장을 맡고있다. 동대학의《한국학연구소》소장과 또한《북미 한국정치학회》회장을 역임하였다. 박 교수는 1990년대 중반부터 캐나다 대표단의 일원으로 수십차례 평양을 방문하고 북한 학술대표단들의 캐나다 방문을 주관하였으며 두 나라 사이의 비공식 교류와 관계를 촉진시키는데 핵심적인 역할을 해왔다. 특히 2010년 지식교류를 목적으로 설립한 KPP를 통해 매해 6명씩 50명 이상의 북한 교수들을 UBC대학에 초청하여 경제, 경영, 무역, 재정, 산림, 환경과학등의 분야에서 6개월 과정의 학술교류를 진행하였다. 박교수는 또한 평양에서 다수의 외국학자들이 참여하여 국제적인 언론의 조명을 받은 경제특구와 지속가능한발전등을 포함한 경제, 환경 관련 여러 국제학술대회를 조직하여 개최하였고 북한 전역에 걸쳐있는 경제개발구등을 방문하며 외국학자들과 북한의 학자, 전문가들과의 토론회도 마련하였다. 또한 이러한 학술교류를 통한 지속적인 지식공유사업의 일환으로 북한의 학자들과 전문가, 관료들을 중심으로 북한학술대표단을 조직하여 해외에서 국제 워크샵들과 현장실습도 진행하였다. 이프로그램은 북미지역에서 북한과의 전례없고 선구자적인 유일한 장기 학술교류 프로그램으로 알려져 있다. 박교수는 남북한의 정치와 대외관계에서 사회발전및 여성문제에 이르는 폭넓은 저술활동을 하였다. 출간물로는 North Korea’s Foreign Policy: The Kim Jong-un Regime in a Hostile World; Non-Traditional Security Issues in North Korea; North Korea in Transition; New Challenges of North Korean Foreign Policy; Korean Security Dynamics in Transition; and China and North Korea등이 있다. 또한 Comparative Politics, Journal of Asian Studies, Pacific Affairs, Asian Survey, and Pacific Review를 비롯한 여러 학술지들에 논문을 기고하였다.
Professor Kyung-Ae Park holds the Korea Foundation Chair at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs of the University of British Columbia. She is the Founding Director of the Canada-DPRK Knowledge Partnership Program (KPP) and a former President of the Association of Korean Political Studies in North America. Since the mid-1990s, she has made numerous trips to Pyongyang, playing a key role in promoting Track II exchanges and diplomacy between Canada and North Korea. The KPP, which is a long-term knowledge sharing and academic exchange initiative with North Korea, has been hosting six North Korean professors annually since 2011 for their study at UBC. The program also held many international conferences in North Korea as well as study visits abroad and workshops for North Korean scholars and policy experts. The initiative represents an unprecedented, ground-breaking program in North America. She is the author, co-author, and editor of many scholarly publications, including North Korea’s Foreign Policy: The Kim Jong-un Regime in a Hostile World; Non-Traditional Security Issues in North Korea; North Korea in Transition; New Challenges of North Korean Foreign Policy; Korean Security Dynamics in Transition; and China and North Korea. She also authored articles in a number of academic journals, including Comparative Politics, Journal of Asian Studies, Pacific Affairs, Asian Survey, and Pacific Review.
